Jerko Bezic, Ph. D

Jerko Bezic was born in 1929 in Kranj. He graduated from the Department of Musicology in 1956 at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana. Whilst he was studying, he worked as an honorary teacher at the music schools in Ljubljana. From 1958 to 1964 he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts, in Zadar, in the Department of Ethnography and Music Folklore. During this period, he also taught at the music school in Zadar. Since 1964, he has worked in the Department for Folk Music at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research.
He received his Doctorate in 1970 at the University of Ljubljana. He taught ethnomusicology at the Academy of Music at the University of Zagreb from 1966, where he was also the Director of Postgraduate Studies in Ethnomusicology from the autumn of 1978 until the summer of 1993. He taught also the course of ethnomusicology at the Department for Ethnology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb from 1986 until 1993. In the academic year of 1974/5 he led the postgraduate course of ethnomusicology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. USA
He was the President of the Croatian Folklore Society from 1968 until 1972 and from 1982 until 1983, and was also the President of the Yugoslav National Committee for the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM). From 1965 until today he has been a member of the study groups of the ICTM. From 1980 he was an associate member, and from 1991 a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 1997, he was elected as Secretary for the Academy’s Department of Music and Musicology.
