Proceedings 21 st symposium of the ictm study group on ethnochoreology, 2000 Korcula

Fifty-nine presentations, a panel discussion, four video showings and a dance workshop represent the largest symposium program and largest attendance in the Study Group's existence, but also represents the largest compilation of papers for the symposium proceedings.

This biennial meeting of the ICTM Study Group on Ethnochoreology was made possible in Croatia through the organization and sponsorship by the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research (IEF) in Zagreb and the Tourist Board of Korčula .

The two themes selected by the Study Group

** SWORD DANCES AND RELATED CALENDRICAL DANCE EVENTS

** REVIVAL: RECONSTRUCTION, REVITALIZATION

were well suited to each other in Croatia . The southern Adriatic seacoast and islands happen to have long-existing organized sword dance groups as well as to have recent revival and revitalization of sword dance activity. Both were demonstrated and shared with the Study Group via formal paper presentations as well as with informal "field" visitations to observe sword dance groups in villages on Korcula island.

Paper presentations were equally balanced between the two themes, and most papers were illustrated with projected graphics, photographs, video examples or slides. The papers by ethnochoreologists, anthropologists, ethnomusicologists, dance historians and folklorists were from twenty-six countries: Belgium , Bulgaria , Canada , Croatia , Czech Republic , Denmark , France , Germany , Greece , Hungary , Ireland , Italy , Malaysia , Mexico , Norway , Poland , Portugal , Romania , Slovenia , Spain , Sweden , Switzerland , Taiwan , Ukraine , United Kingdom and United States . The "native" countries of the presenters do not necessarily reflect the geographical content of the presentations, which include research mostly in Europe: Belgium, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and United Kingdom; in Asia: Korea, Malaysia, Nepal and Okinawa; in Australia; in the Near East: Turkey and Iranians in Diaspora; in Americas: Canada, Mexico and United States; and in Africa: Benin and Mozambique.
