The KASS-project aims to investigate the role of family networks in providing social security, in the sense of material, financial and social support. The project will use ethnographic methods, followed by both interpretative and mathematical analyses of the resulting data, to illuminate this question. It will also analyse the historical paths that have led to the current situation, focusing on interactions between the state social security system, economic developments and family patterns, over the hundred years or more since fundation of modern welfare state. The fieldwork and historical studies will be carried out in eight European countries.
